gearing up for the big day...

Let me begin this post with I am SOOO over these invitations. OMG--they are a pain...checking addresses, adding names, stuffing, sealing...This is one thing I am NOT going to miss about this wedding!! I told Miss V I'll forward my final list to her, and I'll help her stuff, but that is it!! :)

Mrs. G, Miss V and I spent our Friday night stuffing envelopes. The invitations are BEAUTIFUL, and my WONDERFUL friend, Lauryn, addressed them for me. Her handwriting is SOOO pretty!!

The process of stuffing the envelopes:

Our engagement announcement was in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Sunday, February 28.
*UPDATE: Thanks to my grandfather...here is a much better quality image of our engagement announcement in the paper!

bridal shower-feb. 20

On Saturday, February 20, some of Linda's (my future MIL) friends hosted a bridal shower for me. It was SO much fun. Here are some pictures:

HOW CUTE IS THIS CAKE?????? Love, Love, Love it!!! (do you see my two babies at the bottom by the mailbox???)

After looking at several actions shots of me...I must be an animated story teller. I am always making the weirdest facial expressions! The shower was a brunch so Mimosas and yummy food was enjoyed by all. Here we are eating brunch (and apparently, me telling a serious story)

The gift room. So much fun!! We have the kindest friends!!

Maid of honor duty calls... it's SOOOO serious. ;)

My Mamas, Me and the Hostesses (Kevin, Beverly and Mary Jane)

This was truly a wonderful shower. We had so much fun visiting with old friends and family and meeting new friends and family!!

day 11 and day 12

oops. TOTALLY fell asleep before I posted day 11 last night. All this activity is catching up with me and I simply...fell asleep.

So, I'm doing day 11 a day late. Sorry!!

Day 11: The picture above is from March 2009, the approach of Spring. With March 1 coming on Monday, on Day 11 (Saturday) I am thankful for SPRING!! Today I was especially appreciative of the gorgeous weather because I was locked inside doing homework, longfully staring out the window. I have every intention of spending time outside tomorrow (Sunday) to soak in the sun's rays and get my yard ready for Spring. There is something about beautiful spring days that really lift a person's spirit. I can already feel a horrible case of Spring fever coming on...but I'm ready for it!!

Now that I'm caught up...

Day 12: Sleeping in on Sunday Morning (this is the only shot I could find of both babes sleeping together. It doesn't really happen that often!!)

There is nothing I love more than being able to go to sleep without setting the alarm clock and waking up the next morning when I'm ready to --not when I have to. Sometimes, my body wakes up bright and early--and other times I sleep til nearly 10. But it's what my body wants to do and I absolutely love mornings when I get to do just that. Most Sunday mornings (by design) are just that for me. Tim and I go to the 5:30 Mass so that we don't have to feel rushed or busy on Sunday mornings. I love, love, love my Sunday mornings!

day 10

For my Day 10 I know the exact photo I wanted to post--but OF COURSE my scanner doesn't want to work and OF COURSE it was taken pre-digital camera days. You remember those days? When you actually had to DEVELOP film to see the picture? So...this picture will have to do. Ignore the boys and seester and focus solely on the parentals.

For my Day 10--I am thankful for my parents. I am thankful for them for so many reasons. Clearly, I wouldn't be walking this earth today if it weren't for them. Without a doubt, I would not be who I am today if not for them. They have taught me wisdom, strength, how to entertain, how to enjoy family and friends, and (sometimes) patience. They have always had faith in me and always been my top supporters, my biggest fans. Words could never say enough about these two amazing people that helped shape me. Thanks Mama and Daddy!!

day 9

day 9: I must admit to you...I had this perfect post composed in my mind and I had every intention of posting it exactly when it struck my mind...then of course, work happened. I promise, it never fails. When you are trying to accomplish a personal goal, work will kick up full speed. Never, ever fails! So--with that explanation, I'm going to give you a summary of my thoughts and go from there...My day 9 is the ability to blog. I hope this doesn't sound silly to you, but the ability to blog myself, AND the ability to keep up with people I otherwise probably would've lost complete touch with is absolutely beautiful. I love the fact that I can keep up with my girlfriends from college and former jobs each and every day. Before I sign off, I have to give complete credit to my friend, Shawna, who is currently doing a "28 Days of Wonderful." Without her, I don't believe my own inspiration would have come...though Kelly sparked an idea here or there...I just don't know if I could do 365 days like she did!!! Anyway...my 9th day of wonderful is blogging. Not necessarily my own, though it serves as the MOST PERFECT journal...blogging is wonderful because I get to keep up with the lives that I have always loved but somehow lost touch with...and for my out of town family...like the BEHRENS BABIES and MAXX...I'm sooooo thankful that I get to watch them grow up...if only through immediate pictures.

day 8

Lizzy Lou

John John

Will

Libby

A Sassy Maddie

Day 7: I am sooooo thankful for my beautiful, beautiful nephews and nieces. These children bring so much joy to our lives each and every day with their crazy antics and precious innocence. Each and everyone of them bring a smile to my face for very different reasons each and every day. I wish I could see them all more than I do. I love that they are in my life.

Day 7

Day 7: My day 7 of wonderful is a good book. This may seem a little trivial or materialistic, but to me--a good book is a gift. For those of you that don't know me well, I read. I read A LOT. I try to average one book a week. I will read ANYTHING, too. An ongoing joke when I lived with my sister was that our house was a library because we have so many books between the two of us.

I have read (sometimes forcefully) through the long novels such as "War and Peace" and "Crime and Punishment" and flew through the short chick lits, such as "In Her Shoes." I am an addict to the vampire novels (the "Sookie Stackhouse" and "Twilight" series have stolen my heart), to the "Lord of the Ring" trilogies and of course, to Harry Potter. I have been inspired to the point of changing the way I live by books such as "Eat, Love, Pray" and "The Shack."

I LOVE TO READ. So...when I come across an amazing book, you know the kind, that you just can't put down? My heart and soul are transformed into whatever world I am reading about and I get to take a break from day to day living. Books bring me peace and for that I can never be too thankful.

day 6

day 6: My siblings. My siblings are an extra bonus in my life--because not only are they great family members (that I didn't have a choice to get), they're also great friends (that I did get to choose!). My baby seester is my very best friend in the whole wide world and the very best maid of honor--and while we can have some pretty heated battles, we almost always instantly make up and let by gones be by gones. Both my brother and seester are my confidants, my support system and my guides in this crazy adventure we call life. I couldn't imagine my life without either of them!!

Sunday, February 21, 2010

day 5

Day 5: Today I am thankful for lazy rainy days. I love, love, love when I get to stay in bed an hour later than usual and get to listen to the rain patter against the window. Days that I know I can just listen and reflect on the rain pitter pattering outside just make me so happy. Brings peace to my heart.

day 4

Day 4: Today I am thankful for kind hostesses that throw me amazing showers to honor my wedding! It means so much to mean (and Tim) that there is anybody that is kind enough to throw a party in our honor.

I had a bridal shower this morning and it was SO much fun!!

I will post pics later. Just wanted to post my day 4--I'm going to spend time with my fabulous family (and future family!). I'm sooooo excited about becoming Mrs. Rafferty!!!!!

happy birthday little man!

Today is our cousin Maxx's birthday. He is such a cute, cute little man and I absolutely adore him! He is such a little cheese and he will, without a doubt, be a heartbreaker! Amanda, you're definitely not biased, I think Maxx is pretty fantastic, myself!!

Last year, it was as if he KNEW that his "Uncle" Tim and "Aunt" Shay were in town because he surprised us all by arriving early! His mama even called me to tell me that she wasn't going to make it to the lunch that we had planned because she was in the hospital (I still get a great laugh over that phone call, Amanda!!). We were beside ourselves thrilled that he decided to come when we were in town so that we could meet him.

Mr. Maxx, February 2010. Does that little face not just melt your heart?!?!

"Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep"

Last night KARK ran a story about Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, a non-profit organization that administers a network of more than 7,000 volunteer photographers in the United States and 25 countries. At a family's request, a NILMDTS Affiliated Photographer will come to the hospital or hospice location and conduct a sensitive and private portrait session. The portraits are then professionally retouched and presented to the families on an archival DVD or CD that can be used to print portraits of their cherished baby that has been lost.

In June of 2009, some very dear friends of ours, Sarah and Taylor Adams, lost their precious baby Mamie. Sarah's best friend, Crystal Goss, was at the Adams' side, armed with her camera, and caught amazing images of their sweet baby girl. Sarah tells everyone that those pictures mean more than the world to her...and now she wants to pay it forward. In memory of her sweet baby girl, Sarah has decided to become a photographer for the NILMDTS organization. The strength of that woman never, ever ceases to amaze me.

I wanted to share the news story with you all--as I am so proud of my friend. She is such an amazing person! Again, the strength and will power she has truly amazes me!

"Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep"

day 3

Day 3: I am thankful for kind words. You know, when you are just having one of those kind of days--you feel like absolutely nothing can go right...that the world is just not your friend? Then, you receive an unexpected text message or an email or (can you imagine) actually hear unexpected kind words, and your world suddenly begins to smile again. You can see the end of the rough day and your heart feels warmer, comforted. Kind words are often times not planned and that makes the message even sweeter. Genuine words that come from the heart soothe the soul. This past week has been a very rough week, but kind words have carried me through.

Day 2

Day 2: I'm so thankful for my four-legged kiddos. These two are my babies and my life revolves around them (some might say that is pathetic, but these are the only kiddos I've got right now!). They both have their own personality and bring a smile to my face about 1000 times a day. They love me unconditionally. They do not care if I have made a mistake --they just want to love on their Mama. They let me cry when I am sad, they make me laugh, and they are great snugglers! They make me look forward to one day becoming a Mama to some two-legged kiddos. I thank God daily for my two pups, Pippi Lou and Tyson, too!

40 days of wonderful

Today marks the beginning of Lent... This is our time to reflect on our lives--ask of our Father as Jesus did in the Garden of Gethsemane, "Father, you have the power to do all things. Take this cup away from me. But let it be as you would have it, not as I.” I'm currently still struggling with feelings of confusion and loss, a feeling of possible betrayal and how does my Father want me to forgive and move on, to let go? How would He have it, not I? It kills me that I have these feelings on this day--and I am working hard to sort through them.

But, even with these feelings of confusion and hurt, I have decided to reflect on this season in a positive manner (which is the point of the season)--I will focus on 40 days of wonderful instead of the pain that is very near the surface of my emotions. I will focus on the blessings and gifts that have been granted to me in my life.

(Warning: You might see a lot of posts about yummy steak come April, LOL).

Day 1 of my wonderful is my amazing fiance. He is my best friend, my companion and at times, the source of all my frustration. :) I wouldn't have him any other way. I truly, truly long for April 24 to arrive so that I can say my HUSBAND is the most amazing man and most amazing gift to me!! I thank God every day for bringing Tim to my life and allowing me to share the best moments, the worst moments and the in-between moments with this man.

throw me somethin' mista!

Ah...the season is among us.

My friend, Allison, writes on Facebook:
"If I close my eyes really tight, I can imagine the smell of beignets, king cakes and jambalaya. I can imagine the sounds of horns and drums and the floats whistling by. I can imagine the sight of purple, yellow, green...I can imagine the feel of catching beads with my bare hands. Oh Fat Tuesday! How I wish I was in Mardi Gras Land!"

(Though I'm willing to bet that most revelers will welcome this solemn time--as they (we) have been going NON-STOP since the PLAYOFFS started!!!)

So--while I prepare for the next 40 days of reflection, today I take a step back and enjoy the true joys in my life--my beautiful fiance, my wonderful family, my great friends and LOTS of meats (man, I'm going to miss you steak!!)...

I leave you with this: Laissez les bon temps rouler!!

How I wish I was down there..."THROW ME SOMETHIN' MISTA!!!"

trying to understand

This weekend definitely wasn't the best weekend I've had in some time. It started with trivial things and ended with true heartbreak for me and my fellow parishioners at Holy Souls.

I say trivial, because in the grand scheme of things--it is trivial. This was the first year in many years that I wasn't spending Mardi Gras weekend with my parents in the grand ol' city of New Orleans. It just caused for me to be a little bummed and to miss my Mama and Daddy--and my good friends (and family) in Southern Louisiana, but in the grand scheme of things, it was nothing that would keep me down.

Then Saturday rolled around and I read in the obituaries that my very best friend in high school had lost her little boy. I received a rush of emotions--we had lost contact years ago, and since before our high school reunion I had been trying to reconnect with her, with no success. Then to read about the pain she's going through in the newspaper, just nearly broke me. I want so badly to hold her, love her, let her know I have never stopped loving her--even during the years we have been separated. I have been praying for peace and comfort for her and her family since I heard the news. Why does this happen? Why does the Lord take away the little ones? I just can't understand it. It seems like it happens to so many families these days and it just breaks my heart. Please pray for the Brown family as they mourn the loss of their baby boy, Aiden Victor Brown.

Sunday was the worst blow for me, personally. Tim and I go to Holy Souls and have fallen in love with the community--with our pastor--with everything that is good about Holy Souls. We always attend the Sunday evening Mass, so we of course, had to hear the news from a friend that went to Sunday morning's Mass. Our beloved Monsignor was being forced to retire by the Bishop due to alcohol related issues. It has been made clear that no civil laws have been broken--that this is strictly an alcohol related issue.

Which leads me and many of my fellow parishioners asking, "Why?" Why are we supposed to turn our back on our beloved Monsignor if it truly is a disease that is the root of the problem?

Why are we supposed to take the word of a man that many of us have never met--over the absence of word from a man that many of us love and respect?

Why can't we get answers from both sides of the story?

Why? Why? Why?

I am grieving in a way that I didn't know possible. Holy Souls is usually the place we turn to when we feel lost--and this time it seems to be the source of the confusion. I just want answers, as do many of my fellow parishioners, and we're not getting them. It's devastating. It's confusing.

And with that said--Monsignor was scheduled to be our officiant in our wedding. So, we're having to find someone else (that we don't have a relationship with) to marry us. Icing on the cake, no? I just don't understand.

My faith teaches me that there is a reason for this--and that I should not question or try to understand. "Surely God is my Salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation." Isaiah 12:2.

But maybe it's just my personality. I want to know why. I want to understand. What happened? Why so sudden?

I understand that our priests have pledged their loyalty to their superiors and I understand that our Faith wishes us (the parish) to do the same. But at the same time, we do not know our superior and we know our priest. At the same time, we're all only human and can be misguided by our own emotions (this statement envelopes all involved: the parish, the priest and the superior).

So, it is very difficult for me--without both sides of the story to not feel angered and tricked. To feel wary of the true motives. To not question the intentions of those involved in the events leading up to this tragic announcement. To not be comforted by words that seemed more concerned with the well being of the deliverer and not the well being of the parish.

Clearly this situation is out of our control--and clearly, we'll need to lean on one another as a parish more so than we've done in the past. We have a lot of grieving and a lot of healing to do. And maybe accepting that we just may never understand. I beg you to keep our parish and our beloved Monsignor Thomas in your thoughts and prayers while we try to come to terms with recent events.

Msgr--you have been in my constant thoughts and prayers and will continue to remain there. My father greatly admires you as a soldier and I greatly admire you as my teacher and guidance in this spiritual life. While I don't know the full situation, I do not question that you are a very good man and that you have changed my life in such a positive way in these past four years I have gotten to know you. Tim and I love you and will keep you in our prayers. We will all overcome this with the power of prayer and our Faith in Him.

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in Spirit." Psalm 34:18
